He sets the date as 2045. But I think that is just so we wont panic.

I agree with believerornot. 2015 is an absolutely realistic date. I know that it may sound strange for some people, but Ray Kurzweil’s predictions are kind of conservative.
Just to tell you an example: the Blue Brain Project (which is a project aimed at reverse engineering the human brain) is expected to be completed within 10 years. (Kurzweil’s guess is that it still could not be done before 2029.)
Another interesting fact is that it is the relatively weak hardware system that is holding back the even faster acceleration of the Blue Brain Project, so the "mainstream view" according to which software might not be able to keep up with hardware is probably wrong.
It is also notable that reverse engineering the brain is not the only way to create human-level (or human-like) intelligence. There already exist a few companies that are developing general intelligence software engines. (This approach is much less hardware-demanding.) One of them (Adaptive A.I. Inc.) is planning to finish its current project (called Project Aigo) by January 2009.

Interesting, I didnt know the mainstream view was that the software is not keeping up with the hardware. But I do remember when Eidolon was asked if he believes in a soft or hard take off, he said hardware would reach its limit soon and hold everything back for a while, turning any possible hard take off into a soft one.
I just find it interesting Eidolon wasnt with the mainstream view.Posted 2 years ago #
