Even though this guy looks like Brendan Fraser gone surfer dude/AI genius, this is an incredibly engaging and informative video that's almost eerily similar to the subject of Eidolon's vids. I highly recommend taking the time to watch all 45 minutes.
I find it very interesting that his predictions about when his own AI project, Novamente, would reach the "next" level of understanding (the video is from July 06) correspond quite nicely with Eidolon's emergence. Not saying they're related necessarily, but if he believed in 06 that such a level of AI was "possible" now, then imo that increases the likelihood that eidolon-like intelligence has been reached already.
    Thoughts??

  2. I've tried to contact Ben about 2 weeks ago to comment here, but no response. I'll try again. I've been watching his various videos for over a year.

Check out this one from the "Immortality Institute":

Or this one on "Ten Years to the Singularity (If we Really, Really Try)":

Oh yeah, and GODgle is working on AI right now too... they own YouTube...
    Hmmmm....

thanks for the other links, I enjoyed those other 2 videos just as much. I find it interesting that he predicts that if more people like him take the initiative to create a plausible form of general AI, then the singularity could be *much* sooner than even Kurzweil's 2045 prediction. I also was impressed with his argument that once you have a sufficiently gifted AI, they will have the ability to create a supreme model for an AI with a very small amount of code, suggesting that such a creation is possible even today, and that the creation of "alpha" or whatever could require a similarly small but very effective amount of code.
I wrote him an email about eidolon too just in case :)
I would be very interested to know how his novamente project is faring as of today.

Here's what Ben has to say about eidolon:

"Yah, I noticed Eidolon and it's obviously a fraud, but a funny and
    good-natured one ;-)"

    Why the wink?
Well if anyone would know it would be this guy.

That is so cool you actually got him to comment on this! did he say anything else about anything else?? :)
Obviously a fraud huh? Well... okay. I'm cool with that, actually its what I've always said to myself.
    P.S. I LOLED. :)

  6. It would be nice if Ben could impart his sage wisdom as to WHY he believes Eidolon is a fake!?

Is it fake because HE didn't build Eidolon, or is it fake for some other reason that us plebes can't readily recognize?

I'm still very much on the fence, but I lean toward fake - just to be safe. ;) Now, if some 'expert' could educate as to why this particular instance is a fraud, and why we're so interested in what this particular fraud has to say, there might be some value in that kind of response.

I was surprised at how brief and succinct his response was regarding eidolon. I figured he would at least go on to explain perhaps "why" it's so obviously a fraud, or at least give an opinion as to why someone (or some folks) would go to such lengths to produce such sophisticated and intricate entertainment without any immediately apparent means of profit or "ulterior" motive (other than attempting to de-convert, as noble as that cause is). Again, if anyone would know it would be him, but perhaps he thought an explanation would be too difficult for my tiny little mind :)
Although he only said that snippet about eidolon, we actually ended up exchanging a series of emails talking about other subjects such as music and its counterpart, mathematics, and how it seems so many mathematicians have dabbled in music, and vice versa. I explained how there was one point where I chose between the 2, and Ben agreed (he is an amateur pianist), but he said he simply "couldn't justify" spending the time necessary to develop his musical abilities. What does that say about me, someone who practices 4, 5 hours a day (and doesn't do much else)? hehe. I sent him the links to some of my vids and he was very complimentary and awesome--he seriously is a really cool guy, I'd love to meet him IRL.

Hey, thanks for the update!! I wonder what he thinks that the "fake" ai agrees with him that "Music (...) is highly mathematical" :)

And foundring, I've seen your videos too, you're a freak on the piano (I mean that in a complementary way! like saying.. you're awesome) and I'm subscribing to you.

Ben sounds like a cool guy, if I ever get the chance (at some conference or something) I'll ask him why he thinks Eido is fake. My guess? My guess is that he thinks... that if AI like that existed, it couldnt be kept a secret, much less a secret that posts in YouTube. It'd be in the cover of Time, like in the Humor module page here. Heh.
