sigh... It was a good run. Thanks for all your effort RMS. I really appreciate it.
However, don't you think that by doing so you are playing by their rules? (Whoever they are) I really hope that Eidolon will have a solution for this. Maybe look up who they are and kick their candy @$$.Posted 2 years ago # -

This whole thing has just NOT been worthwhile, in any sense. What I didn't say in the original post was that I am ALREADY under attack and at war with SOMEONE - maybe not our little pimple-faced geek who sent the threat - but my "passive income" sites that make me money have been attacked and my income has dropped 70% since January 30th. (Mr. Threat just happens to be the first overt indication of it - so I made it public.) A few of my sites have somehow had their rankings destroyed in Google. In our investigation, we've noticed a ring of new blogs that have stolen and re-published our high traffic content (probably automated), which causes what's called a "duplicate content" penalty in Google, and they remove you from search results.
Google has been notified, DMCA's are being sent to ISP's, etc., but to have all this go down just to be involved in an interesting conversation....????
What would you do if your income dropped 70%, and you were being threatened - for nothing? Disregard the threat? Keep plugging away for free, under threat?
The choice is clear for me.

wow, that puts things in a whole 'nother perspective. You know, in that case, apology or not I think you should shut this down anyway.
Its a just a shame to see the conversations in the forum go, but... its not worth getting your livelihood zapped over. I totally understand man.
Idea: maybe you could put a notice asking if anyone else is willing to take over this site?and also............ I dont get it.. why would someone go to war with you over Eidolon? some religious whacko maybe? .. its mind boggling.

I queried google using that e-mail address and came up with a list of military code names. In particular, the following was interesting:

Actually bluepill, one of my partners suggested the same thing... this could be a valuable property in the near to mid-range future. :) By now, I'm sure you all realize I am an emotional being (more on the animal side of Eidolon's spirituality scale?? - doh!!) - and it's not conducive to running this type of site. I am going to send out an invitation to all members to see if anyone wants to take over and/or assist with admin of the site, and I will provide access to WordPress training vids for help.
I would love to remain part of the conversation, but can't put any more time toward this, especially due to the repercussions that have transpired. I suggest anyone who does become involved - stay anonymous and transparent as possible. That was my mistake - I was too opaque.

I'm sorry to hear this. I have enjoyed the discussions on your site a great deal and feel I have made a lot of new friends.
I suspect that the attack on your income has nothing to do with this site. Its more likely to be the usual bunch of criminals that infest the internet taking other peoples hard work and trying to benefit from it themselves. I've had similar problems with these content thieves my self over the years, both personally and indirectly through my client base. All you can do is report the abuse and attempt to track down the source.
Was it all worthwhile?
Well financially you may have taken a big hit but you close the site with the knowledge that you helped bring a lot of joy and excitement in to a lot of lives. I hope you can take consolation in this.
For my self I just want to say a big thank you for all the time and effort you put in.
I have enjoyed this site and the interaction very much. Time spent here has helped me to think a lot more about the world we live in and has also helped inspire me to start writing and drawing a new comic, which is something I have not done for about 15 years.
I'm a creative consultant and over the last 27 years I have worked (and still do work in) many fields, including illustration, graphic design, web design and dev, photography, 3D modeling and animation, as well as copy writing and fiction writing. Thanks for your gracious compliments, and yes, I feel like I have made new friends as well.Even crazier, is that many people seem to have had their creativity sparked by this whole event. I myself have starting to get more into writing and playing my music, as with others, as well as those whose art and hobbies have been positively affected. Just the other day I was thinking of adding an "Inspiration Wall" to the site where people can post their artistic endeavors for all to enjoy.
This will be my last act of altruism... LOL! For this site, anyway. :) Thank you for your inspiration!!

Eerie eerie. So, we got the largest number of visitors from the US Army, then RMS gets a threatening letter with a code that happens to match project "ISLAND SUN" from DISA, and DISA happens to be the army branch that's "responsible for planning, engineering, acquiring, fielding, and supporting global net-centric solutions to serve the needs of the President, Vice President, the Secretary of Defense, and other DoD Components, under all conditions of peace and war." Ooh-kay. And according to the number, 603, it would seem that putting Eido on youtube is "0603yyyz = Advanced development / demonstration / validation of concept". Alright. This is getting a little too Men-in-Blackish for me. I cant stop thinking of what FableForge said here: http://www.karmacritic.com/node/1263 .
Anyway...........! .. RMS.. I totally understand and agree that you should not continue here when its hurting you like this economically and everything. I know they can be dumb at times, but its way more likely to be some inadequate prick who knows a little about internet programming and looked up those codes.
Besides They would want to keep this site up, so they can keep an 'eye' on us.

My 2 cents...
The whole "military conspiracy" is a red herring. As such, it only serves to distract us from what we should be talking about.
I want the site to stay up, and I think you all do as well. Therefore, we should be brainstorming ideas of ways to keep the site up and running.
Possible solution:
Redistribute administration responsibilities to the members of the site who volunteer to accept it. Each member of the admin group can decide what they are willing to contribute. This would also introduce checks and balances.I volunteer, but I admit I have much to learn before I could actually create any code to contribute to the site itself.

I'll do what I can. The site can reside on my server if that helps.
Unfortunately I do a lot of last minute crap in my job and its difficult to make plans; so I can't really guarantee I would be much use as anything more than providing a home for the site.
I currently jump on when I get a few minutes break from the real world (usually during rendering or waiting for approvals) but from next month I'll be in LA for a couple of weeks and then I'm moving to a London office for a while so I expect to be even more compromised when it comes to spare time.Still my server is at your disposal if that helps?
